PSALM 119:18 Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

Psalm 119:18 implies two truths. First, there are wonderful things throughout the Scriptures. Will you go on a treasure hunt to discover our God in all His fullness? Secondly, we need God’s supernatural help to see the wonderful truths in His Word. There is no magic formula such as 5 minutes of Bible a day keeps the devil away, or memorize 3 verses to receive 3 blessings in your life. Unless God opens our eyes, the Bible will be a boring, trivial book to us. However, He promises to reward those who diligently seek Him and His truth! Will you let the outrageous claims of Scripture sink deep into your heart and consider banking your life on God’s Word as you devote yourself to knowing and trusting Him more and more each day.

To hear these Scripture claims in a chapel message given by Phil Walker at Geneva College on Sept 12th, 2007, go to this message link.

The Outrageous Claims of Scripture

Could the Bible actually be true? Many of us have been trained to say, “Yes, I am 100% positive the Bible is true, cover to cover!” However, what does it mean to us? Do we read it? Memorize it? Take it to heart? Put it into action?

Could it be true and boring/trivial at the same time? The Bible goes to great pains to say “No” It claims way too much! Either it is full of lies, or the most powerful, compelling truth that we must respond to. What are those claims?

The Bible is…

A Sword for Battle:

EPHESIANS 6:17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Scripture claims we are in a real battle with a real enemy, Satan, who hates us and plans to destroy us. Are you equipped to fight him?

A Sword Pointed Inward:

HEBREWS 4:12 – 13 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Why would anyone want a sword pointed inward? Wouldn’t that hurt? Yes. The Scripture truth can be painful, but the cleansing is well worth it as we stand before God in this life, and especially after we die.

Our Daily Bread:

MATTHEW 4:4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” We eat to strengthen us and give us energy. If we have no hunger, either we are dead or terribly sick. Has God given you a healthy hunger for the Scripture?

A Feast to be Lavished:,

JEREMIAH 15:16 When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's delight, for I bear your name, O LORD God Almighty. I love to eat steak, lamb, strawberries, Chinese food, ice cream, etc. Will the Scripture be even more pleasing to me than these?

Satan’s Greatest Fear.

MARK 4:14-15 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. The one who passionately hates you does not want you to have the Scripture in you. Will you let him have his way, or will you find out why he is so scared of the power of the Bible in your life? Why not let Satan know you hate him too; and that you will not be distracted, or intimidated from knowing the Scriptures?

Life-Giving Seed:

MARK 4:20 “Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown." The Scripture bears fruit in souls brought to God. Are you trusting the powerful, deep work of the Bible when you witness, or do you have a new improved formula that works better than the Scriptures?

More Valuable than Thousands of $$:

PSALM 119:72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold. Could you really want to read and take in the Bible more now than if you got thousands of dollars for it?

The WORD of GOD!!

2 TIMOTHY 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, What you DO with the Bible (not what you have been trained to say about the Bible) shows how worth or not worth knowing your God is!!

1 JOHN 2:14

… I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. I pray this will be fully true of you and your friends.
